Summary
With the Astrophage threat still growing and Earth's fate hanging in the balance, Ryland try to understand the organism that brought humanity to the brink of extinction. But why are the astrophage behaving differently, what changed, and what is the connection between their biology and the strange new phenomena he has been studying? A giant sphere of Astrophage drifting through interstellar space is bothering him. Inside, they find what appears to be a rogue moon. Ligh-years away from Earth, he finds a human distress signal coming from its surface. Maybe he wasn't the only one sent to deep space for a suicide mission.
As they search for answers, they uncover a mystery that may explain why a dense Astrophage colony can bend spacetime and whether it has anything to do with the Quiet Rapture.

Andrew Minyard didn't need anyone. He hated that after everything he'd built, everything he'd survived, one name was enough to make him hesitate. Before he could change his mind, he pressed call.
It didn't take Neil long to answer. “Andrew?” His concerned voice. “Where are you?”
Andrew's throat was tight as he replied. “On the rooftop.” He hated how small his voice seemed. Neil was silent for a while.
“Are you safe?” Ah. Of course he meant 'are you safe with yourself? Are you about to do something stupid?' Andrew looked down at his bloody arms, then at the edge of the roof. The following silence was enough for Neil.
"Don't move. Don't hang up."

Wylan had seen the flare of gunfire reflected in his grin, the way he moved through the smoke. Suddenly one of Rollins’ men was standing with a knife buried in somebody else’s ribs while Jesper nearly pitched backward into the black canal water as another shot tore through the sleeve of his coat. It happened so quickly. Cause and effect collapsing into each other before Wylan could properly process them. Simple as chemistry.
