I have been a commodity for as long as I can remember. The Nevada’s told me I was the best. I was special. I was a rarity with unlimited potential. That is, if I acted the way they wanted. If I played the way they wanted as often as they wanted.
Everything was excused with assurances that they just cared about me so much. They just thought I was beautiful. They just knew I could go far if only I stooped a little lower, gave a little more, handed them a bit more control.
I told myself that disobeying them would mean I was ungrateful for the opportunities they had provided for me. How could I turn down my only chance at success and a stable future? The true answer to that question was that I wouldn’t have to, at least not alone.
