Beside him, Ginger shrugged. She was monitoring the stranger’s vitals through a tablet, occasionally pausing to adjust her glasses. “We tried. He prefers the walls.”
“So it’s quite possible this nanowhatsit treatment seriously fucked him up the way it kinda fucked me up,” Jack said, grimacing, “except that when my brain took a holiday I hit on everyone in the room, including Champ, while John Doe here seems to have fixed on butterflies.”
“When your brain ‘took a holiday’ you did indeed regress into some sort of sex-addicted Neanderthal state,” Ginger said blandly, flicking through John Doe’s medical statistics, “which, I might add, says a lot about your character, even if Agent Tequila thought it was hilarious at the time.”

She stopped mid sentence. It was probably good that Joel interrupted her. She hadn’t meant to sound so disbelieving. Something medically wrong would explain Joel’s swings in health over the last few months. But it was too late, and the words she said with unintentional callous had landed a bit too hard.
“You’re right. You’re not my daughter.”
Ellie knew it was true — she hadn’t been anyone’s daughter in a very long time. So why did it hurt so bad to hear him say it?
“And I sure as hell ain’t your dad.”

Joel’s on edge the entire time they’re in the hospital.
He’s not stupid. He knows how science-types tend to put the why above the how. He sees the way they look at Ellie, like she’s a fascinating specimen instead of a child. There’s a calculation in their faces that he mistrusts immensely, and he knows at once that he won’t leave any of them alone with Ellie.
They try to keep him out of the room at first when they do their tests, but HIPAA died twenty years ago along with the rest of their world, and it only takes pinning one doctor to the wall by his throat for them to see that he’s best left to his own judgment calls about whether or not he needs to stay with his kid.
The gratitude in Ellie’s grip when she reaches for his hand when they start drawing blood tells him he made the right one.
(an alternate ending in which Joel doesn't have to Rambo an entire hospital) (aka Joel being a great dad while terrorizing an entire building of medical professionals)

Anyway, Peter agrees because no paying rent and free food means more money for suit upgrades and maybe even online university.
He soon finds out that Reed Richards wants to run tests on him, Sue Storm keeps fussing over him, Ben Grimm keeps hugging him and calling him 'bud', and Johnny Storm is the most ignorant, bratty, tactless, infuriating, idiot freak weirdo out there who only cares about three things: his abs, his fans, and his stupid blond hair.
And so, 'No rent, free food, central heating system' became Peter's mantra to try and get through this without ripping Johnny's head off of his dumb sculpted body.
