He has spent his entire afterlife and much of his human life systematically and methodically destroying his relationships with other people, breaking chains and making deals to gain power beyond his mortal imagination, all at the (until now) welcome expense of being close to others. There are no friends in Hell.
But perhaps now he needs there to be.Or:
