Mike presses forward. Will’s house is warm. “I can’t stop thinking about myself and — things I don’t want to admit, and I’m so confused and I just miss you. And — I can’t stop thinking about what we could have been if I had just —“
There is a sudden crack when Mike is no longer seeing Will, but his floor. Nice tiles, browns and creams, tastefully uneven hand-placed little squares. Mike readjusts his glasses, which are so crooked they nearly slipped off his face, and now he can see the craftsmanship clearly. Beautiful work.
The left side of Mike’s face throbs with pain. He’s registering now, the feeling of an entire hand hot on his cheek.

Ten years later, Mike is no more whole than when Will left. He finds himself in the big city for a book signing, and rekindles an old fire long dead and cold. If only Will hadn’t changed so much, or had — a boyfriend. -

‘A brush of the knee, a bump of the elbow, a shared look, accrued like a snowball rolling down a hill, until it was obvious.’
Will asks, sincerely, “How obvious?” A whisper, eyes wide, the sin of curiosity kept in a secret space between Robin and himself.
The snowball became an “avalanche,” apparently for Robin, but had Will enough snow on his hill to say the same for himself?
Will, as he has come to understand, has a lot to think about. Mike had certainly shown him things beyond brushed knees and shared looks, talking about snowballs was nothing when it came to the blizzard that is their relationship. So Will continues on his day mostly focused, but his mind can’t help but play back certain events like little movies of the past eighteen months, after his conversation with Robin.

"You're staring," Will comments, voice low and a little flat, his eyes don't reach Mike's.
"I am," Mike says, voice soft, just for him. "And you're worrying."
"I... am not," Will dismisses, tracing the wet cloth down the back of Mike's jaw, right behind his ear, his other hand cradling his face steady as he does.
"Okay." Mike knows he's in for something, some kind of scolding. It's exciting as much as it is terrifying, because he knows what it will be about.

Summary
He wondered how Will was holding up, remembering his aversion to the dark. It’s been many years since that fear began for him, and Mike hadn’t shared a room with him in a long time to have a clue how he sleeps these days. Other than the both of them accidentally crashing on the couch during a late night movie, but of course, Mike didn’t really count that as going to bed.

Summary
In the summer of 1989, the Byers family moves to Montauk, cutting short Mike and Will's last summer together before college. Certain he'll never see his friend again, Will confesses his love on their last night together, rocking Mike's world entirely. As the tear-filled goodbyes draw to a close, however, Mike is suddenly offered the unexpected opportunity to travel with the Byers family and help them move.
They have five days out of state together to address Will's confession, learn to communicate, and maybe, just maybe, say a few things they should have said all along.

“Why? Why won’t you ever tell me what’s wrong with you?” Carlton’s voice is filled with frustration, and it sounds like nails on a chalkboard to Will.
What is wrong with him. It’s such a loaded question. Why does Will wake up screaming sometimes? Why can’t Will handle the cold? Why are there days when Carlton’s hands on him feel like being kept under water with no way up?
And why can’t Will tell Carlton the truth? How could Will possibly explain it without sounding insane? What is the human translation for being taken and kept in another dimension, violated, and possessed, only to then be violated yet again—
This part of him is something Will is never going to be able to share with anyone else. That nobody would understand.
Why won’t you tell me what’s wrong with you.
“Because you wouldn’t get it.” Will somehow manages to say it without gagging.
And then, Carlton goes in for the kill.
“Oh, but Mike does?”

Maybe always.” He sighs heavily. “Which means I have to wake up now, but I’m not sure how.”

“I’m sorry,” Steve said. “I tried to make her wait until you woke up, I really did.” He tossed something in Mike’s direction, which Mike caught without thinking. “Happy birthday, by the way.”
Mike blinked. He’d completely forgotten, between Holly going missing, frantically searching for a way to get her back, and being possessed by Vecna himself. “Uh, thanks,” he said awkwardly, running a hand through his hair and looking down at what Steve had tossed at him. It was a Kit Kat bar. His favorite. He wondered how Steve knew that.
“Oh, right!” Robin darted forward and hugged him before he could react. He met Will’s eyes over her shoulder, but Will still had a hand covering his mouth and his expression was unreadable, aside from the red on his cheeks. “Happy birthday! There’s a surprise waiting for you in the kitchen. Anyway—mind reading. Totally a thing now, right?”

Through "the power of best friendship," as Robin puts it, Mike and Will develop a telepathic connection when Vecna tries to take Mike. Neither of them are really upset by it, especially when it gives them the opportunity to finally destroy Vecna once and for all.
