The room is too bright.
It’s quaint, in a nauseating sort of way. Polished floors glint from the gleaming honeycomb chandeliers overhead, make him squint. A few vases sprinkled here and there, filling the room with a sickeningly sweet scent – even a waffle-cone headrest framing the silken sheets of a neatly-tucked bed. Outside, the golden sun gleams, the gentle rays of light spilling past curtains that waver in the afternoon breeze.
It's meant to be beautiful. Luxurious. Welcoming.
With one sweep of his cane, Shadow Milk tears it apart.

Scar’s hand slides down his arm to take hold of Grian’s, lacing their fingers together. “Let me preen your wings,” he pleads softly.
Grian frowns at Scar, “Scar, I told you I’m fine.”
“G, I can see how uncomfortable you are,” he points out, “you’re wincing every time your wings move, and it looks like it hurts.” He watches Grian’s expression, seeing how the man cringes slightly at being called out. Scar squeezes his hand lightly, feeling how warm their palms are against each other. Grian’s palms are calloused, skin thick from building and wielding tools for hours on end. Scar slides his thumb along the back of his hand in gentle strokes, adding to the warmth between their skin. “Let me? Please? At least to make up for knocking you off balance before.”

Scar's laugh starts as a deep, bright rumble in the pit of his stomach, soaring from his throat to punch the air in short, ribboned strokes, each a brilliant star between them. The air here is warm, dazed, an illuminated snow globe— except the globe is his tree, and the snow drifts in downy feathers outside it, forming an intricate latticework of frostbitten fingers that crawl up the sides of his windows.
They’d retreated here an hour ago— once their impromptu snowball fight with Doc had transcended from three hermits to thirteen— all shivers and chattering teeth, drenched to the bone. Now, with the fire stoked, sweaters both discarded and exchanged, neither one of them can ignore how the bedraggled wreck of Grian’s feathers are in desperate need of preening.
"You're doing this on purpose!" Grian's retort is tart, but it lacks true bite, curling high as a silver wisp of smoke. "Sto— stop it, Scar, stop trying to tickle me—!"

And so it begins.
Scar could hear Mumbo's muffled groan from the kitchen, a soft chuckle in his ear the only encouragement he needed. Sure, the way Cub was tracing every scar on his back also helped him feel a bit mischievous, but it was mostly the shared chuckles they had going on that fueled his need to be a nuisance.
Unfortunately, he just happened to be dating three other nuisances. This was a fight he wouldn't win too easily.

Summary
Dr Carmilla was as clever as she was cruel. It was something that was somewhat of a given when presented with the people she’d chosen to install a mechanism in. None of them could be described fully ‘good’, some may have started out that way, or, at the very least been filled with idealism rather than rage or gasoline but it was telling that the one mechanism with a possibility for sustained and predictable good deeds had an easily accessible switch to stop that sort of nonsense.
So, it was highly likely that the good Doctor had planned for a contingency that she may be destroyed by her own creations. She worked hard to train them and instil an impossibility of them taking negative action against her but it never hurt to be thorough. It might also be that she had a sick sense of humour but when presented with the evidence it was probably both.
Or, Dr Carmilla installed a surprising extra piece of programming that the Mechanisms only discover after her unfortunate accident and have to find a way to deal with it.

Mary’s ghost followed him so far, and she might yet follow him down the way to DC. He’d had three blissful days of rest before she found him, screaming about what he had done to her. It took him another week to get going, to find a car and leave.
She hasn’t found him yet. But Gerard doesn’t know how long that will last. He doesn’t want to stop and find out.
After the suicide of his mother, Gerard Keay finds himself haunted by her ghost.
