There shouldn’t be any sense of distance between himself and the General, but somehow, his voice feels closer. Lower.
“Are— are you secretly a pervert, Commander?” Kei stammers, looking over his shoulder at a presence that isn’t there. “I always thought you were a prude.”
The General laughs, warm and unreadable. I wonder.

The first time Makita ever threw a baseball, it landed deep in a bush full of cobwebs and pokey branches. He was bleeding and itchy and covered in leaves after practically sticking his whole torso in to find it, but the grin on his face was so wide it hurt as he handed the ball back to the visiting youth coach and asked to try again.

There’s a pause.
Todo blinks at his phone, the video showing himself walking up to the plate and dragging a cleat across the ground before raising his bat above his shoulders. It looks like last night’s game—Todo hasn’t watched it back yet.
“Um,” Chihaya says, audibly thrown off. Todo can practically see the look of catlike incredulity on his face. “No?”

Summary
The skin around Haruka’s index fingernail is pink and rough, and Kei sees it now: a strip of torn skin by the edge of the nail. “It’s just a hangnail,” Kei says, the tension leaving his shoulders as relief. “Your glove must’ve snagged it and ripped the skin.”
Haruka sniffs. “Will it get better?”
“Of course it will, silly,” Kei smiles, patting Haruka’s hand dry with the bottom of his own jersey before letting him go. “You don’t need to cry over something like this.”
“Okay,” Haruka says, wiping his face with his sleeve. It’s still red and splotchy, but he’s found his smile again, shaky as it is. “Thanks, Kei-chan.”

Kei fully grasps the hilt and…the sword is loose.
Fuck.
He only gives a small, a very small, tug and the sword flies out with ease. It honestly feels like the sword is the one who propelled itself forward.
Kei looks at the now empty slot in the stone, up at the sword his hands, and then at the crowd below who has grown silent. He turns to look back at the king, and even the old man looks gobsmacked. Was the guy betting on someone else to pull the sword out? It's not like Kei can apologize for what he's done. Hell, Kei was betting on someone else too.
