Ryland made a startled sound as the blanket twisted beneath them. Sand scattered. The firelight jumped gold across Ryland’s shocked face.

Tommy does not live in a fairytale. He ran away from his parents in an act of survival, not rebellion. He gets a sketchy janitor job that’s in the middle of nowhere to have a place to sleep, not rest.
Yet when he meets the creatures- the merfolk- he believes he’s in a fairytale. He cleans their tank and observes them from their iron bars, trying but failing to ignore the bruises on them.
As time progresses, Tommy decides that the creatures deserve their happily ever after. No more Dream or experiments, and no more Tommy once they escape.
No happy ending for Tommy. That is if the creatures didn’t have their own script they were following.

Tommy stared at Techno like he’d grown a third head. He’s gotta be fuckin joking. “...that's it?” He mumbles. “That's it. You don’t believe me and frankly I wouldn’t either. Just trust the process okay? We'll show you we mean it” Tommy just nodded. Technos fucking full of it.

Making eye contact with the man across the battlefield, explosions and screams and the cries of withers surrounding them, that's all Tommy can think of. His dads warm arms surrounding him, the soothing voice of the man reading Tommy some myth he'll forget about later, just them two and the crackling of the fire nearby.
That's all Tommy wants. He doesn't want to care about anything else anymore.
