They’re alone at the bar now. No one is watching. He could press a finger to Hollander’s lips, wait for Hollander to open for him. He could slide the pad of his thumb across Hollander’s tongue, tip his chin up, and pour the liquid into his mouth. He could watch the bob of Hollander’s throat as he swallows it down.
Ilya takes a drag from his cigarette instead.
“What?” Ilya asks as Hollander stares him down, not unlike an enraged bull. “You are going to tell me not to smoke? Is Vegas, Hollander. No one cares.”
“Neither do I,” Hollander mutters, turning away toward the bar. “Are you going to give my drink back?”
Ilya glances down at the shot glass in his hand and shrugs. “No. Is mine now.” He throws the shot back, suppressing a wince at the taste of subpar hotel bar vodka. When he looks up again, Hollander is already walking away from him into the sea of brightly colored slot machines.

After hooking up at the MLH awards, Shane doesn't go back to his room. He goes to a party. Ilya can't help but follow him to the casino where he realizes something is wrong with Shane.

"You're leavin'?" Shane's voice is slightly slurred, and he can't bring his arms and legs to do what he wants. He wants to get up. Get up. But he's slipping on the sheets, falling back down into the softness of the mattress.
"We both got what we wanted, yes? You even more than me." Rozanov already has his pants on, slipping his shirt over his head. And Shane isn't floating anymore, he is crashing harshly back to earth.
"No," he tries to say, but it comes out as a hoarse whisper. "No, 'm not, I-I—"
Rozanov is moving towards the door, barely looking at Shane. It's the indifference that makes Shane break.
"I had long day," Rozanov says, "we should both sleep. You have water in the fridge, and you have your alarm for morning, yes? Will be fine."
No. No, nothing will ever be fine again.___
After Boston loses against Montreal 3-4, Rozanov wants to edge Shane once for every goal Montreal scored. It’s fucking hot, until he wants to leave right after, missing all the signs that Shane needs more than an orgasm to be taken care of.
He almost repeats Vegas.

Ilya: I always have fun. I do not know what your problem is.
[Harris lets out his signature booming laugh, and Ilya grins widely.]
Harris: You maybe have a little too much fun.
Ilya: There is no such thing.
Shane: But what’s the point of the questions if we’re already in love? Like, we’re married. You were there when it happened.
Harris: Yes, but they can help you deepen your connection, and it makes for good content. People love your love.
Ilya: I think we had a pretty deep connection last night, am I right?
[Ilya holds his hand up for a high-five from Shane, but Shane only glares, and Harris looks slightly horrified. Ilya looks back expectantly, but when Shane doesn’t move, Ilya high-fives himself. With the sound of the clap, the screen goes black.]

After months of being ghosted by Ilya, Shane gets horrible news about his health. At the age of 23 he gets diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He is supported by his friends and family and yet he cannot stop thinking of his rival. But he and Ilya have never been more disconnected, so he resigns himself to fighting this without Ilya in his life.
Ilya knows he was an asshole last Spring. Shane has been ignoring him all summer. But he figures that once he's back in North America and the season starts, he'll be able to get back in Shane's good graces. And then Montreal announces that they have placed Shane Hollander on Long Term Injured Reserve and he panics.

Cliff is very proud to be Ilya Rozanov's best friend (or at least his best male friend). But then Ilya moves to Ottawa, dodges Cliff's attempts to hang out and, oh yeah, suddenly announces a close friendship with a guy he's hated for most of a decade. This would be much simpler to deal with if Cliff had any idea how to talk to Roz about feelings. Or how to talk about feelings at all.
