To be clear, Astarion was in no real danger. He wouldn’t have left his home planet if he thought so. In between the spirited stories that had influenced his escape, the whirlwind romances and daring heroics, the elders told the same horror stories that all starborn heard from the time their hearts began to burn: if you didn’t behave, stareaters would come in the dark and drink the light right from your veins. If you didn’t stay home, you’d be captured, sold, and killed as soon as someone found out what you were.
But what he should have wondered, as he hopped from planet to planet, was how much the elders were keeping from him. How true their tales were to the nature of stareaters. And, most importantly, how many things were much worse than dying.

Summary
Balduran University is a small school in a sleepy little town. People choose it for the small class sizes and the peaceful campus life. Astarion liked it because it was far away from home and the people he'd rather not think about anymore. He had a good thing going for himself for a while: a job in his chosen field, students to terrorize, and admin staff he could pick fights with when things got too boring. It was a lonely life, but at least it belonged to him. Gale thought it would be a good place to find himself and his passion again after clumsily exiting a relationship that had dominated the majority of his adult life.
Perhaps they end up with a lot more than they bargained for when they are forced to share an office and end up unlikely mentors to a troubled young student with a dark a brutal past.

He was barefoot, his trouser bottoms ragged, his tunic stained. He was holding at least three or four apples to his chest, with another one in his mouth, and was perched precariously on a branch, plucking and hurling more apples to the ground with his free hand.
