They told him Henry was gone. Taken, not slain in any honest fashion; snatched by whatever godless thing hunted Kuttenberg after dark, with no body left to recover and no grave for Hans to weep over. Only the sword, which Hans had locked away because he could not bear the sight of it.
Yet Henry stands before him.
At first glance, he looks no different from usual: the same face, the same eyes, the same mouth. There is even colour in his cheeks, a faint flush doing poor work of hiding the pallor beneath, as though he has spent not weeks but months somewhere the sun could not reach.
Mutt does not come to greet him.

It says to how far they have come that Henry feels immediately defensive on Hans’ behalf. He can say what he likes to Hans, Hans is his friend, but if anyone dares to say a word against him in his presence, he will respond.
Hans’ toes poke out of the water then disappear again. He blows a few suds away, sends them scattering across the hazy water, and then splashes up along his chest, leaving a glistening sheen that leaves Henry's mouth dry.
“Hans.”
“I received a letter,” Hans finally mutters, refusing to look at him. “From my mother.”

Not like red, red, more like," Henry squinted, staring at Hans's eyes. Hans didn't move a muscle, "Like if you'd been crying or something."
"How is that any better," Hans wrenched his hand away from Henry's, and tried to rub at them again, "I don't want to walk around like a heartsick wench."
"Stop! I promise you look more like a foolish twat, if that helps—Hans! You'll make it worse." Henry leaned over him now, trying to take hold of his wrists, but Hans dodged, curling sideways because the scratch was feeling so good.

Hans and Henry visit a lake in Rattay, in the middle of Spring, with nothing but a couple wineskins, Hans's infuriating allergies and the endless need for a good time.

More lost details, more differences, more that persists only in Henry’s mind. Oh, to capture this, to sculpt or carve it. To be able to hold it in his hand with such pressure that it breaks the skin. To absorb it and let it absorb him.
Hans carves Henry a wooden figure of himself. Through blood and killing and stealing and coming home, it becomes the only real thing.
