Summary
Martin heard rustling outside the spare room. Jon was still in the office. He sighed deeply. It was quite late into the evening, though it wasn’t uncommon for Jon to stay long.
Usually he tried to leave him be, ignoring it. Jon was his superior, in what place was he to tell him what to do? Sometimes, when he was confident enough, he’d go remind Jon that it’s 10 in the evening and he’s been there since 7:30.
Today was not one of those days. He was lying on the cot, not the most comfortable place to be, but it beat the floor any day.
He could feel that familiar knot down in his stomach, the one that told him today was NOT a day he should see Jon, if he hoped to keep his dignity.

Or, Martin has a hard time not giving in to his urges and starts fantasising about Jon while he’s working.

As he got back onto his feet, he noticed just how calm it was. He looked around, confused. The rain had softened, and the streets were a lot quieter than they were before. He couldn’t see anyone, besides the older man. *This is not normal, right? There should be more people here, right?*
“Where is everyone?”

The older woman leaned down as she continued in a softer voice, “Although, I would recommend you keep the one made of skin a bit better hidden.” She gestured towards the last book still laying on the ground, a bit further from where the others had fallen, the one containing his mother. In his hurry, he hadn't noticed he hadn't picked it up yet. He quickly grabbed it and put it back into his bag.“Do you know what they do?” He asked her, as he closed up his bag properly this time.
The woman straightened herself again. “Not all of them, but I do have some idea of their capabilities. I assume you’re far more knowledgeable on them than I am.” She had a strange look in her eyes, as if she suddenly thought of something.
“What are you planning to do with those? It’s quite dangerous to have this many on you at once.” Suspicion seeped through her voice.

Or Gerard Keay ends up meeting Gertrude Robinson a few years earlier, she helps him, and he helps her, and along the way, he also meets this one adorably awkward assistent.

It was only by the time he turned the corner of Lansdowne Way and South Lambeth Road that he realised where he had wandered off to. He stood in front of a narrow brown-grey converted house. He had been here before, a few times. During his… “investigations” into his coworkers these past few months.He wasn’t sure how good an idea it would be to… drag him into this. He wasn’t sure if he’d even be willing to help after… He *shouldn’t* help him, if he was smart.
Martin certainly wasn’t who he’d expected himself to turn to, but who else did he have?
