"You're so beautiful." Zoey whispers, the compliment sinks into every fiber of Rumi's being. It's a warm fuzzy feeling at first and then it turns sour. Rumi's eyes scatter away as she tries to redirect the thoughts that tell her she is anything but beautiful. She could never be beautiful with the patterns that scar her skin."I'm not." Falls from her lips before she can stop it. Without missing a beat Zoey cups each side of Rumi's face urging her to look at her. Rumi keeps her gaze averted, too embarrassed to look at her partner.
"You are." Zoey means every syllable as her thumbs stroke Rumi's cheek.

Every year, Zoey disappears for a weekend family gathering near Seoul, her parents flying in from Burbank, her grandparents already in the kitchen, her aunt and uncle hosting, her nieces and nephew waiting at the door. It’s loud, affectionate, ordinary in all the ways Rumi and Mira never got to have.
This year, they come with her.
Zoey thought she was protecting them by keeping that part of her life quiet. Instead, Rumi and Mira step into a house full of warmth, stories, children, and unconditional love and realize just how much of herself Zoey has been making smaller for their sake.

Rumi had been about to put her phone on the nightstand and turn in for the night when she heard talking outside her door, knowing it could only be Mira or Zoey, she shook her head gently, a small smile gracing her face. She rose from her rather cozy spot under her covers, stretching a little before she strode over to open the door, stopping right in front of it, hoping to maybe get an idea of what the other two girls were talking about;
Or, Mira and Zoey show up at Rumi's door as she's about to go to bed, I wonder what they could want?
