It wasn’t like she’d never experienced happiness before; she could still remember the ache her cheeks had after being unable to stop smiling on her and Leon’s wedding day. But this time it was completely different. There was complete serenity within her. She didn’t need to worry about what experiments were being done to Sherry, whether Leon would make it back from this mission alive, what the suits would say in her corporate meeting tomorrow. None of it mattered anymore.
Instead, she was able to spend an evening with her family and their two newest arrivals, listening to their laughter, their atrocious singing, their cringeworthy jokes. And for once she didn’t need to worry about Leon’s drinking, either. She’d put him through a strict rehab program after years of begging, and kept her hawk eyes on him constantly.
It had all worked out in the end.
