    Ray Garraty entered the Long Walk, with a wish to kill the Major fresh in his mind, and a sunhat and baseball packed ready in his bag to walk who knows how far. 10 miles, 100, who knew? But he was as ready as he could be, waiting for the Walk to start and surrounded by boys who may or may not be dead before the final stretch, whose bodies would litter the stretch of road ahead of them.
    And looking around and introducing himself to the other Walkers, Ray thought that yeah, maybe he could do this.

    But hell, he wasn't expecting a kid to be here.

    “Hi, Ma,” Rory said. “I brought you these.” He held out a bouquet of pink flowers he’d picked up from a florist he’d spotted along the way. Ma always liked to have pops of color in the house, something to make the place feel more alive.

    “These are beautiful,” she said. “Let me find a vase for them.” She stepped aside of the front door so that he could come in. “Take your coat off, get comfortable. I made you your favorite pancakes.” Ma set the flowers down on the kitchen counter and began filling a tall vase up with water for them, and Rory glanced around the walls of the house to see that nothing had changed—the place was still lined with portraits of him as a baby, all of his school photos, and nearly every picture he’d drawn for her as a kid.

    Rory goes home to visit his mom.
