Xiaoshaui drops his pen on the desk and takes off running before Suowei finishes his sentence. He bursts through the side door, runs across the shared hallway and into the bakery. He takes in the new, warm decor of muted blues and greens, eyes scanning until he sees Guo Chengyu.
“Xiaoshaui!” The man has the audacity to greet him with a cheerful wave. “Have you missed me?”

He makes it through his front door before the calls start. He cancels three calls from Shen Wenlang and then gives up and turns off his phone. A moment later, the anxiety hits him and nausea curdles his stomach.
