Elster fulfilled her promise. She ended both of their misery. Ariane was finally free of the endless pain.
But some bioresonant part of her must have clung to life, because instead of embracing oblivion, Ariane woke up in her old classroom, in her old school uniform. Was she still stuck in the manifestations of her memories, or had she truly been jettisoned backwards in time?
