Life moves on past that first week, though—and Mydei remains at Phainon's side.

“Yeah, well.” Aventurine laughed briefly, helplessly, as the look in Ratio’s eyes shifted towards one of growing comprehension— and maybe even a bit of flabbergasted awe. “Even I have my limits, I guess. Don’t, ah… read too much into it.” As if that would keep Ratio from immediately formulating whatever theories he pleased.
Am I truly so precious to you? He could read the question in Ratio’s face. His bafflement. It was warranted, whatever questions Ratio might have of him. But he didn’t really want to talk right now.
Moaning, on the other hand… now that was on the table.

Mydei looks down at him. The weight of his full attention is brutal—their weapons sheathed, the air heady with night-blooming flora, the only sound the cicadas' mourning song. There is no distraction from the furrow of Mydei's brow, the distance in his eyes, forever insurmountable.
“Sometimes," Mydei says, so softly that Phainon feels him more than he hears him, "you sound like you mean these things you tease me with."
Phainon freezes. He wants to do—something. Anything. Shove Mydei down. Drive his sword through his stomach into the earth to keep him still. Kiss him until they suffocate and the scouts find their bodies, entwined on the ledge.
