Summary
"Every time,” Kaveh seethes, “every time you do this! You - you’re trying to distract me!” Alhaitham licks his hand again, and Kaveh can feel his smirk. This time, he shoves his fingers into Alhaitham’s mouth, which he remembers then is a mistake for several reasons. The first is that Alhaitham’s eyes widen for just a second before he sucks, curling his tongue around Kaveh’s fingers deliberately. The second is that it doesn’t actually shut Alhaitham up, just muffles his hum. The third, of course, is that Kaveh really does like the sight of Alhaitham’s mouth wrapped around something.

Kaveh’s fastidiousness over the aesthetics of their nest never ceases to puzzle Al-Haitham. What does he mean these aren’t good sticks? Al-Haitham plucked them earlier from a large adhigama tree similar to their own, complete with sprightly leaves, blooming buds, and a bright sheen to its bark—all signs of the tree’s good health.
“Weren’t you the one who once said that functional quality and safety are equally as important as aesthetics?” Al-Haitham retorts with a low ee-chup. “These ugly but sturdy sticks are perfectly serviceable for a durable nest foundation.”
Kaveh and Al-Haitham made for an extremely odd pair in Avidya Forest. After all, whoever heard of a peregrine falcon and a bird-of-paradise sharing a nest together?

Is it the same for Kaveh then? Al-Haitham ponders in the silence. Could he love only in the way he loves his creations and the process of creating? These imperfect things that he moulds from clay, from metal, wood, and dirt; that he shapes and refines into perfection from his own worn hands and overwrought mind, nourished with his blood and sweat and tears, forever chasing after an ideal so unattainable, it always seems out of reach?
Al-Haitham does not think himself an artist, so he does not know; perhaps will never truly know, this eternal struggle that seems to beset the artistic soul. Still, he feels a shiver running down his spine as he continues to watch Kaveh’s hands working the moist clay; as he begins to wonder what ‘form’ he would take if Kaveh’s fingers were to thoroughly shape him into ‘art’; into something born of Kaveh’s ideal, of Kaveh’s love.
Evoked by a fleeting touch, Al-Haitham begins to dream.

Although rare, fragments of his godly remains were spread throughout Sumeru. Most were corrupted by the withering, but some were unblemished, whole in the reflection of the past. Any scholars who encountered them meticulously catalogued them, tracking patterns about where and how they formed, and how to end them. The usual way was to act out the memory itself, taking the role of Deshret and his companions or enemies.

Rationally, Kaveh shouldn’t ask Alhaitham if he wants Kaveh to help him. He really shouldn’t. Sex could ruin this peace treaty they have non-verbally contracted between them. Sex could mean things will get horribly, terribly awkward. Sex would mean that Kaveh would never be able to look at Alhaitham without thinking of the memory of Alhaitham’s hands all over his body.
“Have you really thought this through?” Alhaitham asks once again, and he hasn’t sounded this serious since his offer to house Kaveh so many moons ago.
“This is my fault, as you said. I should take responsibility.” Kaveh weakly replies, licking his lips nervously. “Right?”

“Much more certain than you are.” Al-Haitham replies. “Besides, did you forget that I've to be the one to win this race? That’s part of Nahida’s bet with Sangemah Bay. No need to worry—I’ll be fine.” He pulls the goggles over his eyes as he nods at the mechanic, a glint of wry amusement in his gaze. “Jedi reflexes are a lot quicker than most, after all.”
“You…” Kaveh’s expression sours at that, his concern morphing into indignation. “Who said I was worrying about you!? It’s the Pod I’m really concerned about! I’ve just about perfected the engine efficiency and thruster stabilisers, so don’t you go crashing it beyond repair!”

Kaveh has achieved so much today, it should be fine to do this much for himself. It should be fine to enjoy this much. There is absolutely nothing that Al-Haitham could possibly do to ruin this day!
Of course, this is when Al-Haitham chooses to walk in covered in blood.
Kaveh has enough troubles on his plate even without dealing with his confusing relationship with and unfortunately lingering feelings for his stubborn, infuriating roommate. But when a strange conspiracy begins closing in on Al-Haitham and threatening the precarious balance of their daily lives, Kaveh finds himself having to reevaluate the nature of their relationship and reckon with the ghosts of the past.

There’s never really a good time, way, or reason to tell Kaveh about his long-lived, amoral, exiled, criminal ex-partner — who, Al-Haitham will note, was not any of those things at the time they were involved.
However, there is definitely a worst way for Kaveh to find out.
