Summary
"Let me help.” A hundred years or so from now, I believe, a famous novelist will write a classic using that theme. He'll recommend those three words even over “I love you."
- Star Trek, 'The City on the Edge of Forever'Pope Innocentius may be, as the papers say, pure, unblemished, a saint in human form - but Vincent Benítez is very much a man, and wants nothing more than to go home.
Thomas Lawrence will see him through, no matter the cost.

Summary
“May I ask you a personal question? You do not have to answer, of course.”
Lawrence's eyebrows rose. Given some of the subjects they’d already discussed, he scarcely dared wonder what the Holy Father might consider overly personal. “My dear Vincent, of course. Whatever you wish to ask me, please go ahead.”
Benítez smiled. “I was simply wondering. Are you and Cardinal Bellini... intimate friends?”
“Of—of course not!” Lawrence stuttered, knowing his face and chest had to be breaking out in splotches of bright red color, and hating it. “What an absurd thing to say! I—I haven't... I would not—”
Benítez just raised his own eyebrows, seemingly unmoved by Lawrence’s outburst. “Why not?”

Summary
Finally, they arrive at the homily. Benítez is much briefer than his predecessor. And yet, his speech feels fuller, somehow. He pins them all under the darkness of his gaze. When his eyes land on Aldo, he feels as if Benítez has stripped him bare, that he can see the horrible, green monster that writhes beneath his breast. He speaks of love and light, a desire to move them forward into the future while paying homage to the past. Aldo feels trapped in that damned vote, watching the world crumble under his feet.
The morning after Vincent Benítez is elected Pope Innocent XIV, Aldo Bellini attends morning mass. He tries to grapple with the scale of everything he's lost to Benítez: his role as Secretary of State, the Papacy, and Thomas Lawrence.
Or, the one where Aldo is still sore about the conclave, and he has to navigate his new place in the Curia while trying to sort out his feelings for Thomas and Vincent. They all have feelings about this, separately, and then together.

Summary
Goffredo Tedesco doesn't do graduate students, Americans, or flings with tourists. Aldo Bellini swore he wouldn't fall in love over a semester abroad. After a night out in Rome, suddenly everything is different.
Maybe one summer of shared cigarettes would be enough. Maybe it would have to be.
