Summary
Jackie hadn’t said it back, that night. And it’s not like Shauna would normally go postal about something so trivial in hindsight, but after having spent that entire evening watching Jackie giggle and blush and be kissed from Jeff’s arms, it had been akin to lighting a match inside of her chest. She had been burning, burning to be touched, to feel Jackie’s lip gloss smearing against hers, to smell Jackie’s perfume assaulting her nostrils, to feel Jackie’s hands-
Well, you get the picture.

And before Shauna can even open her mouth to argue, Jackie’s pushing herself up on arms so wobbly it looks like they might just snap, and Shauna has to resist the urge to shove her back down onto the mattress. Jackie scrubs a hand over her exhausted face.
“Just…what time is it? We have to start getting ready for homecoming soon, and I don’t want-“
“Wait, what?” Shauna blurts, her jaw legitimately dropping. Is she fucking serious?
“Jackie, are you kidding me? You’re not going to homecoming. You look terrible.”

“I’m glad you’re okay.”
She says it so quietly Jackie’s not sure she even heard it at all. Maybe it’s a post-almost-dying hallucination (is that a thing)? She chooses to believe that she did, if only for her own sanity.
She doesn’t feel okay. She’s never felt worse.
And she has a feeling, deep down, that it won’t get better any time soon.

Not only was it a different source– not any part of their vault or any other vault for that matter, but it was joined by coordinates too.

Coordinates that led to the surface.

Summary
In the months after Callie's birth, Shauna reflects on what she thought motherhood would look like before everything happened, and reels from every way her new baby reminds her of the one that never got a chance. Somehow, the suburbs feel even more isolated than the wilderness. And motherhood seems to be the biggest test of survival of them all.
But once, it sounded like a fantasy. That was before she lost Jackie, of course. Everything is.

Summary
The baby lives.
It’s the only good thing Shauna has left to hold onto—and even that doesn’t feel real most days. The others are distant now, wary, watching her like she’s half-possessed. Like she’s a cracked glass about to shatter. Maybe she is.
Natalie’s the only one who doesn’t flinch. The only one who slips inside the cabin after dark, silent as snowfall, to sit by the fire and take the baby from her arms without asking. She doesn’t coo or smile, just rocks him gently, eyes shadowed and tired, but steady.
And somehow that’s the beginning of something—not soft, not exactly tender, but necessary. The kind of bond that grows in the hollows between grief and survival. They take turns watching the baby through the night.
Out here, love doesn’t look like what it used to.
