“Holy shit, dude,” Hayden whispers, too loudly, as he pulls Shane away. “No way you were just talking to Ilya Rozanov.”
“Uh, yeah. We just met. Wait, did he lie to me?” Shane asks, looking back over his shoulder where Ilya is now standing next to a short but very muscular woman with long black hair. “What does he play?”
Hayden stops, so Shane does too.
“You don’t know who that was?”
Shane makes a face that says ‘no shit’, and waits for an answer.
“Dude. You are so innocent. Ilya Rozanov, ‘Russia’s Greatest Love Machine’?” Hayden says, like it’s obvious.
Shane looks at him blankly, and then Hayden laughs. Not like, a chuckle. He full on cackles, bending over like he can’t even contain it. “Man, he’s like prolific.”
“At what?” Shane snaps, because he’s getting really sick of not being in on the joke.
“He’s a porn star, man.”
“A-” Shane says, swallowing thickly. “What?”

There’s a long pause. “Oh,” Joe says.
He hasn’t hung up, which is what Nicky was expecting, so he uses the silence to start apologizing.
In which both Joe and Nicky struggle to fit into a world where your cycle determines so much about your romantic prospects when neither of them have typical cycles or even know if they want that kind of romantic relationship. In which Joe co-runs a center where people with atypical heat and rut cycles can come and receive the help they need. In which Nicky really wishes he hadn't written a series of very stupid letters to the editor of the local paper back when he was pretending he didn't need the kind of help Joe was offering.

Joe debates the relative merits of making a fuss and decides ultimately that his best bet is to just make sure it’s a party he himself enjoys and, ideally, Merrick doesn’t.
Finally, when he realizes his lunch break is twenty-five minutes away and he’s wasted enough time thinking about this that he doesn’t want to actually start working on something real in what little remains of his morning, he picks up his work phone and dials the number Merrick dropped on his desk.
On the second ring, a deep, pleasant voice answers, “Hello, this is Nicky speaking?”
“Hi Nicky,” Joe says, twirling the phone cable around his finger. “I’m Joe. I’m supposed to help coordinate the holiday party with you?”
In which Joe is coordinating a holiday party over the phone with a guy named Nicky who keeps praising Joe just a little too much for Joe to be casual about about it. Thankfully, the nice HR guy called Nicolò Joe emails sometimes says it’s okay to date coworkers.

"We met when I was twenty," Joe confirms, old sadness tugging at the corner of his mouth. “We had seven together.”
Nodding, the man looks back to the floor. He's quiet for a long time, minutes possibly. And then;
"Seven months, for me," he says, very softly, and roughly. And oh, Joe's heart aches for him.
In a world where soulmates are predestined, life after love seems impossible. Joe and Nicky give it a go anyway.
