"We're making progress on the vitamins! Sort of.
There's a lot of research to do before we get anywhere near the lab on this, and it's hard to know if we'll be able to get anywhere with our severely limited resources. At least if we can gather enough information, we can give the Eridian scientists something to work on when we finally arrive. I say we; Rocky has been focused on translation mostly, although he's working on a secret side project that he won't tell me about."
Rocky and Grace have a lot to figure out. Some of those things are very, very complicated, and some are much simpler than either of them expect.

Eridians don't sound like this, the fleshy parts of us are more internal and not so… active? There's just so much to hear, with it in my arms like this. The textures of its skin, the lines where the skin folds out of habit. The burn where I touched it, really touched it.

Erid not have social equivalent, language not have equivalent. We use same pronoun for everything, even not-Eridian things and not-alive things. You say humans, they are bothered by the wrong pronoun; you will be upset that we do not use for you a male pronoun, question?”
I furrow my brow and grin in disbelief. “Rock, no, that’s quite literally the least of my worries right now.”

Something was standing above his towel.
No… someone.
They seemed to be observing the towel, claws tapping against the material with what he took as curiosity, pinching it between the appendage.
Was it Rocky? It’d make sense, the Eridian would certainly have something harsh to say about him leaving his stuff laying around. He always had some mean quip to insult his shoddy human memory.
He opened his mouth to defend himself before Rocky could say something snappy, when the figure then moved, stocky legs rising from beneath their carapace and lifting them to their full standing height.
They were tall. Too tall.
That wasn’t Rocky.
OR
Grace receives an unexpected visitor one night in his home on Erid.

Summary
The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.
Used.
The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”
