Summary
"A wife who loses a husband is called a widow. A husband who loses a wife is called widower. A child who loses his parents is called an orphan. There is no word for a parent who loses a child. That's how awful the loss is." —Jay Neugeborn, An Orphan's Tale

Summary
Dana pushed her glasses to her forehead and stood. Which, in hindsight, bad move. The room spun around her and she barely managed to stay upright. Her heart jolted into her throat and then her knees gave.
"Shit, Dana." A pair of strong arms caught her before she could really go down, easing her to the floor. Someone cradled her head carefully, resting it against something solid behind her.
or: Dana faints at work, and everything spirals from there.

Summary
Cassie stepped back as Doctor Al-Hashimi opened the door, a bag slung over one shoulder. Together, they made their way to where Dana was waiting in her car. Cassie hopped into the passenger seat as Doctor Al-Hashimi slid into the back.
"I see you've picked up a stray." Dana peered at the attending in the rearview.
"We're off shift, please call me Baran." The other woman said tiredly.
"Baran it is," Cassie answered for both of them, twisting a bit in her seat so she could address Baran. "Call me Cassie."
or: After the brutal fourth of July shift, Dana and Cassie let Baran into their home and show her that maybe the people of the Pitt aren't so bad, after all.

Summary
Cassie lifts her gaze from her bloodstained fingertips and surveys her surroundings. The air is hazy, acrid enough to make her cough. She's in her car, her vision a wash of monochrome. She closes her eyes, trying to quell her rising nausea. The accident comes back to her in pieces with the rest of her senses. She can smell smoke. The car ahead of her had slid into her lane to pass someone. The blare of a horn reaches her, distant, but obnoxious. Cassie had slowed, but there was a truck riding her ass, so not by much. Not by enough. The airbags are deflated against her steering wheel. Glass peppers the seat and Cassie's lap. She'd tried to swerve.
or: Cassie gets in an accident and Baran has a seizure about it. Luckily Dana's there to sort it all out.

Summary
"When is Maman going to be home?" Sami asks, hours after the sun has set. Trinity had honestly started to think he'd fallen asleep while watching the cartoons she put on for him and she startles slightly at the sound of his painfully innocent, drowsy words.
"I'm not sure, bud," Trinity says with a frown, checking the time on her phone. It's already well past when Baran usually would have texted that she was on her way home. Her notifications remain stubbornly empty. "You know how busy she can be."

Summary
Alicent stumbles to her feet, and Rhaenyra reaches out to take Alicent’s hand in hers.
But also, they skate across the healing scar on her forearm.
When King’s Landing fell, when Aemond’s death was announced, when Aemond’s Kingsguard turned on Alicent and Helaena and locked them up, Alicent’s wrist was sliced in the chaos.
They had a maester come in and stitch up the mess, but now, Alicent sees the scar that she left in Rhaenyra’s forearm all of those years ago, that reminder of the night where the king was ready to give Rhaenyra everything and the wife that had stood by his side for so long not a damn thing at all.
Alicent’s son, for whatever he turned into, for the cruelties that he displayed, was still her son, and she never gave him the justice that he ached for against Rhaenyra's boy.
Alicent is going to have to live with that fact for the rest of her life. The fact that she failed. The fact that her son’s bones have never been properly dredged from beneath the God’s Eye and likely never will.
But both of the sons in question are dead, now. A wound, a scar, an ache that will take so much to ever properly stitch shut.
But perhaps—
Perhaps a chance at healing.
