Someone lingers in the doorway, undeterred by the freezing air. A woman, leaning on the handle of her suitcase. She catches my eye, and I feel obligated somehow to stop - long enough, at least, to listen to her fumbling apologies before she asks for directions to the only hotel in this part of town. I can’t help but notice her freshly dry-cleaned suit, the gabardine coat, the short salt-and-pepper hair neatly slicked back. The Gustavian is a ramshackle place - the sort where the E in HOTEL no longer lights up - and I can hardly imagine her there. But then again there is an incongruent note of panic in her voice, and she leans right into the biting wind that pushes in, opportunistically, as soon as I open the door. “Follow me,” I tell her, “we need the same bus.”
