Summary
As Richie flinches at every touch, Eddie is determined, scowling as he tries to repair the mess, fix the one type of problem that he can solve.
Richie doesn’t tell him why it happened, because Eddie knows. So, he watches him work in silence. He doesn’t cry, he doesn’t rant, he doesn’t get angry at the world for hating him through no fault of his own. Richie focuses on Eddie, and his heart fills instead with gratitude and something else that is immense and buoyant and powerful. But, just like the rest of his feelings, he shoves that away too. Files it deep within his psyche so that he can maybe evaluate it later, determine its relevance on his own time.

Summary
“City morgue,” Richie warbles when he answers the call.
“What the fuck, Richie?” Eddie shouts, no patience for Richie’s lame attempt at a prank.
“Shit, Eds,” Richie sighs. Eddie can hear noise from Richie’s end, voices that indicate Richie has company. He thinks he can pick out Bill’s energetic tone from the blend. “I’m sorry, man, we got backed into a corner–”
“What the hell kind of corner would force you to release a track with my fucking voice on it without my fucking permission?”
“Yeah, he’s mad mad,” Richie’s voice is distant, clearly turning his mouth away from the phone to speak to the other people in the room.

Summary
“You know, once you do it the first time, it’s really not that big of a deal anymore,” Richie says, his tone comforting. Eddie feels his shoulders relax at his words.
“Sure, but when is that ever going to happen?” Eddie complains, shrugging hopelessly. “People don’t like me as is, I doubt someone would like me enough to want to put their mouth anywhere near me.”
“I put my mouth near you all the time,” Richie replies, then pulls a sour face like he wants to suck the words back in.

Summary
Richie hears the heavy front doors opening and the gust of cold air that comes in alongside the new customer, and he holds his breath, watching Eddie’s sneakers get closer and closer to the table he's hiding under.
“Hey, Bill.”
“Hey, Eddie.”
“What the fuck is Richie doing?”
Damn, Richie curses to himself. He imagines Bill just shrugs in response to Eddie’s question, because all of a sudden, Eddie is crouched down across from Richie, quirking an eyebrow at him.
“Oh, hi – fancy meeting you here,” Richie says, breathlessly, pretending like he had no idea Eddie had even entered the building.
“Hi, Richie,” Eddie responds, and Richie wants to cry.
The man of his affections looks as gorgeous as ever, only his hair is more tousled than usual and he’s even wearing a wrinkled blue shirt, as if he woke up late and had to rush to get ready. But he still has that glow to his skin and his eyes look bright – he probably slept much easier than Richie did.

“‘I’m not doing shrooms with you in an airport bathroom, Richie,’” Richie echoes, in a fairly good impression of Eddie’s voice. “‘I’m not getting drunk in an airport bar, Richie,’ ‘Why the fuck did you drive here so early with me, Richie—’”
“Those are all valid,” Eddie snaps. He looks at the board again. Their flights are leaving within half an hour of each other, now. After a beat, he sighs. The thought of anything that might make it marginally more bearable to get on his airplane back to his miserable fucking life in New York is tempting. “Is there actually a bar here?”

Summary
Ever since Eddie was born, his soulmate mark had been illegible. Sometimes he would stand in front of the mirror and just stare at the signature on his hip, trying to make it out. He would stand there for hours, guessing and second guessing. Around hour four, everything stopped looking like a letter and started looking like thick, black scribbles that no one would ever be able to read. Then Eddie would give up, and take a shower, and not look at his mark again for weeks and weeks, as long as he could avoid it.
