Summary
Nikolai’s head did not lift from its bowed position when he heard the door open. He stayed kneeling, clad only in simple trousers, hands resting palm up on his knees. He knew it was Zoya. He felt the audio blanket- she could maintain them effortlessly now- settle around them in the familiar pop of his ears. With Ravka’s newfound peace there were no guards posted outside their chambers, but knowing even if someone approached they could not hear them put his mind at ease.
He was shaken from his thoughts as she clicked her tongue, the sharp sound demanding his full attention.
“What do you need tonight?” She asked from her place by the door. His tongue felt glued to the roof of his mouth for a moment, this was always the hardest part.
“To-“ He barely got a syllable out before she cut him off.
“Speak up.” She tutted, and he could see her boots coming toward him. He cleared his throat and tried again.
“I don’t want to talk, or choose, or- think.” He said, it all rushing out in a single breath.
Months after the ending of Rule of Wolves Zoya gives Nikolai what he's been craving.

But you left?” Enjolras probed, voice going thin as one might narrow their eyes.
“Yeah, I couldn’t be around them forever. Things had to change, y'know? People grow apart.” A lie quickly told, he would answer for it at another time.

Homecoming AU.
