He threw his head back and laughed so hard he started coughing.

Sylvie turns back to the water. “It’s harder to be nice to you.”
“That was you being nice?”
“My instinct, with you, is to be…” She makes a swirly motion with her hand but doesn’t finish the sentence. Her movements are looser when she’s had a puff, her spine not so straight. She’s looser, but still Sylvie. She speaks her mind but she’s careful about it.
“Your instinct is to bite back. I get it.” And he does. With Sylvie, Mobius doesn’t feel the urge to posture and smirk and prove himself. He likes the banter, of course. Bantering with a Loki, any Loki, is bound to be fun. But she brings him french fries and surprisingly good weed, so he doesn’t feel the need to bite. Sylvie, though, is still learning how to not see the TVA when she looks at him.
She sighs. “He told me once that it was harder to stay. Harder to hope. To fix a broken thing.”

Summary
Most of the code I write is code that I can evolve on the fly. My code to delete me out of security footage, for instance, was something I'd built up over months, adjusting it to different proprietary SecSystems as I encountered them. But this was different: my comm and feed protections were what kept me from falling under anyone else's control, and I couldn't afford to have them be anything but perfect, which was why I was here. If I wanted to fix this vulnerability properly, and I did, there were things that I needed to do that I couldn't do without help.

In the aftermath of getting hacked, Murderbot asks ART to help it make sure it can't be hacked the same way again. As it turns out, applying and testing a security patch is a little more challenging than usual when the vulnerable system is, you know, your own brain.
