Summary
Theo plops himself onto the closed toilet seat, drowning in his Spider-Man robe while Eddie blow-dries his hair. He leans his face into Eddie’s stomach, humming to himself and fiddling with one of his bath toys that he’d rescued before being plucked from the water. The tub slowly drains, the bathroom is humid and nice-smelling, and there’s the weight of a toddler against him. Eddie isn’t just falling asleep, he can feel the stress of the day melting away.
He sighs. Theo tips his chin to look at him and sighs back, flaring his nostrils like they’re two tigers communicating in chuffs.
“I’m happy that you’re here, Eddie.”
“Yeah,” Eddie says. He aims the blow dryer down the back of Theo’s robe, making him giggle. “Me too, kiddo.”
or, Buck needs some help putting Theo to bed. Eddie has his back.

In his periphery, Jade’s stockinged foot tamps. “So soon?”
Eddie looks at her, then at Zane. She looks disappointed, but Zane—

Buck leans over and kisses her. “I want to be there for you. Through all the Braxton Hicks, okay? All the false alarms, and—and the real thing. You’ll have nothing to be scared of.”
Another Braxton Hicks grabs ahold of Eddie's belly, like just saying the words triggered it, and she winces. Buck holds her through it. It doesn’t last as long as the first one.
“I hope there’s not a lot of false alarms,” she says, huffing a laugh.
Buck kisses her warm cheek. “Either way, I’ve got your back.”

"There's a reason I haven't looked at a woman in a year, Buck."

Summary
Christopher can’t do this. His hand is broken, his legs are going all shaky the way they do before they give out, and he’s barely in high school! He’s fifteen! He can’t even drive yet, probably won’t ever be able to, and he’s had to see his dad and Buck on the brink of death so many times since he was a kid that he’s starting to really get sick of it.
Christopher can’t do this. He can’t deliver a baby. Doesn’t it make any difference that he’s just fifteen?
or, A dead mall, a hostage situation, and a baby. This is not how Christopher planned on spending his last day of summer vacation.

Summary
Buck was standing where Eddie had left him. The other man was already talking, something low and instructive, and Buck was listening with an expression that was pleasant and gave nothing away. A whole face full of nothing.
But before the door swung shut, Buck glanced over.
One look. The kind you gave when you weren't supposed to and gave anyway. Eddie held it for exactly as long as he could, which was not long at all.
The door closed. The carpet changed back.
"Buck was nice," Chris said.
"He was," Eddie said.
They walked back toward the Third Class sections without further discussion.

Eddie thinks he’ll really like that. It’ll feel good, to lean back in the seat and feel the sun on his face unshielded by the headrests blocking the view in front of him. It’ll just be him, and the road, and—

Someone who likes the same music as he does and doesn’t care where the car goes at all. Eddie doesn’t know who it will be yet, because he’s still little. But it’ll be someone who likes him a lot.eight-year-old eddie diaz fantasizes about the freedom of the open road; the fantasy follows him all the way to 2025. or: an eddie character study
