    Even years later, Shin’s chest quivered at the mention of war. He stood and turned away from the court, barely listening when the voice rang out—smooth, low, unwavering.

    “Commander Saint Thamnithit Nitiroj, Sword to the Crown Prince.”

    Time folded. The noise below fell away in an instant. Shin’s pulse slowed, then slammed like thunder against the inside of his skull. He turned like something unseen had pulled him around. The name reverberated inside his ribs, carving into old scar tissue.

    The last time he’d heard that voice, it had been promising to protect him, preparing to die.

    Now—

    Now Shin rushed forward and looked down over the railing, breath caught in his throat.

    And there he was.

    Saint.

    Or: Shin grew up believing loyalty was love until the boy who swore to protect him left for war and never returned. Four years later, Saint is alive. Saint is loyal. Saint is his guard.     It's the first winter after Pitch's defeat. Jack is happy, he's not alone anymore, and his memories are gradually returning. But when a treasure hunt gone wrong puts Jack and Jamie in danger, flinging them through time and space, they find themselves on an island neither of them have heard of before. Jack's first priority is to get Jamie home safe, but Berk's inhabitants - human and otherwise - are certainly not making it easy.

    Knowing they will leave Berk and the Vikings behind as soon as they know how to, Jack is not going to risk the pain of growing close to any of these people (or dragons, for that matter). But Hiccup Horrendous Haddock, wearing his heart on his sleeve, doesn't seem to want to take the hint.
