“What the hell does that mean?” He asks it so shrilly that the sweatdrops of passersby, oily with their toiling and their fears, drip onto his kindling-laughter; and the sun, its own indomitable eye, alights it. Through the colors of the rainbow, and then in colors no other man can see, the fire burns thin, spitting out more smoke than it possibly could.
But possibilities are meaningless now, aren’t they? Nothing is as it seems. If it ever was.

She almost misses the gaunt, black ewe sat on the leaf-litter.
“Hello, little one,” she says, softly, lowering herself that her height might not startle the ewe. “Whatever brings you here?”
Of the animals who make the Wild Isle their home, few are as gentle as sheep. Those who cannot fly or swim to it must have unnatural means of arriving, most often by the goddesses’ will, and for the serendipity of the day, Diana is certain the ewe is their doing. Though she cannot be given their gifts, they have their ways of bending their self-imposed laws to serve them. Such as a fortuitous happening of something not belonging to the woods.

“You’re gonna be reppin’ your country,” Nero says, hands behind his back, walking as he eyes the contestants, “and the kitchen’s as serious a business as bein’ a Sage’s wizard.”
“That is doubtful,” Oz says.
“You’ve been given plenty of ingredients. The goal’s to bake a cake—an edible cake, please. The reason? To make our Sage happy. The winning cake, chosen by both of us, is gonna be their official birthday cake. And the winning country gets braggin’ rights for havin’ the best baker in the Manor.” Nero pauses. “Well, second-best.”
The Sage waves from the dining room. “I’m sure everyone’s cakes will be delicious, though!”
“That is also doubtful,” Oz says, glancing at an irate Owen.

Summary
It strikes Booster, quite suddenly and absurdly, that these same rocks, battered by time and water, are what comprise the edges of the country on maps—common enough to be mundane—and on a landmass. They are at an identifiable point at the corner of a landmass, and they themselves would be less than a dust speck; they would fit into one stuck to the windows of the League watchtower. And for any being from beyond the solar system, they would be so small as to not be thought of at all. Once, Booster’s cosmic insignificance would have upset him.
Here, on unfamiliar land in an unfamiliar time, among cliffs and hills that have withstood millennia, Ted is right next to him, taking up most of Booster’s field of view, and he’s beaming.

The afternoon had been a hectic one. Downpour and flooding, thankfully, no one had gotten seriously injured, Rutile slept soundly in the next room; wood cracked within fireplace, offering a lovely tune to accompany the pouring rain. Tonight, his clinic serves as a sleepover. A jingle at door sees him getting up and putting practiced smile to use:
“Coming, coming! What can Dr. Figaro do for …” Hospitality reserved for people nurtured and raised fades to a chilling disconnect; albeit dressed differently than he remembers, there’s no way he’d forget the man now standing in his doorway. Looking as reluctant as Figaro feels. Not wanting to watch rainwater and dirt trickle inside more than it has, he encourages Oz to get inside already and make certain the door is locked. Seems his afternoon is about to get more hectic than he bargained for. The taller wizard hardly has his first foot through the door before Figaro’s resuming what he suspects will be a largely one-sided conversation. “Why are you here?”
