    Summary

What if Kabru didn’t believe in Santa Claus, and Mithrun was a very different type of elf?

“...okay, probably a stupid question, but what’s a krampus?” Kabru asked. He jolted slightly when he heard the heavy thumping of something moving around on the roof overhead. It sounded like an elephant was on top of his house, and about to come crashing through the ceiling. “...is that a krampus?”

“Yuh,” Mithrun responded. “They’re monsters that feed off of people’s sadness. Look like big goat-men. They know I’m inside, and they want to finish me off.”

“Why?” Kabru asked, his forehead creasing in confusion.

“I told you, I’m a level 5--” Mithrun started to say, but apparently he realized repeating himself wasn’t going to help, and he heaved a huge frustrated sigh. “I work for Santa Claus. They want to stop us from bringing joy to the world.”

“Santa’s not real,” Kabru said, feeling a little bit hysterical.

“You’re applying pressure to a stab wound on an elf,” Mithrun replied. “Santa’s real. He writes my paychecks.”

    Summary

"I hardly believe that marrying the victim is proper etiquette for me as a detective to exhibit, Miss Pattadol," Kabru tried to play off with a smile. "And I imagine even less so without the victim's consent."
"Mr. Mithrun would never have been gifted consent, no matter should he...!" -She struggled for words- "... sh-should he be of sound body and mind. Please, Detective. Have faith in me when I say that I truly believe you are his only hope. Perhaps even saving him in more ways than you could ever know!"

Kabru found himself looking towards the envelope from earlier. Atop it were two pictures: one beholding a beautiful young man, wavy hair, sharp elven ears and bright silvery wide eyes, while the other... the same man. His hair sheared and clumped, ear tips crudely hacked off and one eye, his now only eye, bruised with exhaustion, the light of life completely dulled to a black iris. He more resembled a memorial death photograph as opposed to a living portrait.
This was the current Mithrun of the House of Kerensil: the victim of this case Miss Pattadol presented him with, and now, Kabru's fiancé.

    Summary

[NON-FICTION FANWORK] Dungeon Meshi is full of vivid and complex world-building. When you take all the information in the manga as a whole, there are clear and consistent patterns in what real world cultures the author was inspired by, and how she arranges them on the Dungeon Meshi world map.

In this essay, I will catalog and explain every real world cultural reference I was able to identify in the manga, including character and location names, historical and mythological references, clothing, and of course food!

WARNING: This essay is full of spoilers for the entire Dungeon Meshi manga, all the extra materials, and the anime. Disturbing and violent moments that happen in the series are described, discussed and analyzed. The essay also discusses real-life world history and mythology, which contains sensitive subjects like war, death, slavery, abortion, child killing, sexual assault, incest, and bestiality. These topics are mentioned in an academic context, and not described. Please proceed with caution if this concerns you.
