Mai loved Zuko, he was her could’ve, her almost, and maybe her should’ve. Not her person, but close enough that she would have been happy enough. Content enough, safe enough.
Nowadays, Mai still liked to watch him. He looked great, playing with the turtleducks, and playing with Izumi, still spending time with Ilah. Somehow it wasn’t awkward, the way he loved the pup like she was his through and through (appearance-wise, the siblings were similar enough to pass down the same traits. Except for the eyes.)
Or: Mai watches Azula with children, and she knows not loving her wasn't an option.

"I’d bet anything that your heart races whenever he’s around,” Azula counters, her voice dropping lower than usual. Her tone is almost seductive. “So tell me, Katara. How do you feel about Zuko?”
Katara hates Azula Sozin. Well, maybe that's not the right way to put it—but Azula certainly hates her with a burning passion. So when Azula hears a supposed confession of Katara’s ‘crush’ on Zuko, it isn’t exactly ideal.
What’s more is they’ve been assigned a group project to do together, and Katara finds that her days only become more entwined with Azula. Zuko is painfully oblivious, and Katara intends to keep it that way, even if she doesn’t see him much anymore. He seems to spend more and more time with Mai.

Summary
Upon returning to the Fire Nation, Azula has a set of challenges ahead of her. Stop an invasion, figure out if the Avatar is alive, and try to keep her idiotic brother from making too much of a mess. But the day after her return, she wakes up in a bed that isn't hers, and a body that isn't hers, either. And the day after that... the day after that.... the day after that....
Based on the book 'Every Day' by David Leviathan, follow Azula as she travels the world, learns how to be human, and tries to capture the Avatar. All in a day's work, right?
