    Summary

Mary found herself rather taken by those few lines, and breathed out quickly to steady herself. It was much less the content of the verse, she thought, and much more the intensity and sincerity of Mr. Hayward’s voice. She glanced across the room again, locating the Gardiners talking to an older couple, and Ann still talking to Mr. Powell. No one was watching them, which meant no one noticed how flustered Mary must have seemed. Except, of course, Mr. Hayward, who had kept his eyes on her the entire time he spoke.
