“Have you had dinner?” he asks after a few minutes.
“… yes.” Shinsou’s tone doesn’t hold much conviction. His eyes avoid Shouta’s, shadowed by a nearby overhang. Shouta raises both eyebrows and looks skyward.
“Oh, really. What did you have for dinner?”
“Konbini coffee and some tictacs?” Shinsou makes hesitant eye contact with him again, rubbing at the back of his neck. Shouta snorts.
“Oh well in that case, I’m sure you’re fine then.” He rolls his eyes, nudging his mentee over toward the front door of the izakaya, glass half blocked by old window clings and faded advertisements. “In here, come on.”

Aizawa Shouta is 22 years old and he is in the agency lobby. It’s sometime around nine o’clock, maybe, and he’s just checking in to start patrol. It’s been one of those days you could cut the air with a cake knife, and that's the kind of night it's shaping up to be too. The kinda thing that sticks to your teeth.
The most interesting thing about memory is the way that it bleeds. It never stays quite how you put it. Take it off the shelf, turn it over and over, look at it well.

So.... you want to hear a story, eh?
“A hero.” The man spits, straight in his face, and Hitoshi slams his eyes shut a fraction of a second before it hits. Slimy and warm from his mouth. It reeks like paint thinner. No, sharper. It drips down Hitoshi’s eyebrow, around the outer orbital curve of his eye. “Yeah… that’s it… heh.” He feels his face being tilted by the muzzle, the man admiring his handiwork.
“You ain’t a hero, boy.” His molars squeak together and his eyes water as he breathes through the bruising pressure. He’s not sure when he started holding his breath, but his head swims with the effort, black fuzzy spots dancing across his vision. The man’s breath fans hotly across his cheek when he presses closer and Hitoshi’s heart gallops, so loud he’s sure the man can hear. He can’t move, he can’t open his mouth, the man bears down on him and he can’t, crushed he’s gonna be, he’s– “You ain’t gitta save no one in this life, g–”
Or, self-indulgent gritty crime drama, think like if Breaking Bad smashed into post-apocalyptic Japan at speed*
