It is, however, in our moments of greatest weakness that we are presented with moments of fate– incredible, life-altering events that sneak into our peripheral vision and demand our full attention– events such as Daphne’s gaze falling upon a lonesome, suspicious little blue-and-green arcade machine in a poorly blocked off employee’s-only section. At first glance, the seemingly dead machine piled up with a bunch of nameless others.
Except this machine wasn’t nameless, not by a long shot.
Daphne couldn’t tell you when her feet started moving, when her hands found the loose nylon rope separating her from the dusty old metal box of pixelated wonder. All she knew for certain is that one moment, she was slumped against the wall near the skee-ball machines, and the next, her fingers were pressing against the wobbly little joystick and snappy little buttons in a nonsensical but immensely pleasing rhythm.
“...hello, beautiful,” Daphne whistled– for once, not minding the dust or grime beneath her fingertips as her gaze fell over the machine.
A beautiful machine indeed– wrapped in images of a lush and cubic Green Hill Zone, golden rings and of course, everyone’s favorite blue rodent: Sonic T. Hedgehog himself.
