Whitaker's head shot up, vexation pulling him down into a darker pool of anger, the pressure and the fatigue finally too much. “I just told you, I cannot afford it,” It was a bark, so he adds, as if its gonna change how much he had fucked up in the span of five minutes, “Sir.”
“I-- I get that. I’m asking you to eat with me. Not to buy me lunch.”
“No. I don’t want to-- I’m not a charity case.”
Robby breathed sharply through his nose, then he laughed. “Ah, kid. I ate Adamson’ whole house when I was doing my rotations. I don’t think I was a charity case… Do you?”
Robby eyes were soft, earnest, his hand- like it always seems to do- found the crook of Dennis neck, thumb now not pressing but brushing over his boney shoulder.
“Are you lying to make me feel good?”
This brought an honest to god laugh out of the man, “Not at all. I was flat out broke.
He nodded then. Because the fogginess of his head was simply not gonna let him work. So he says, “Yeah. Okay.” He moves away from Robby’s hand like one act of kindness needed to cancel the other out. “I would like that.”or the one where Robby feeds Whitaker.

Summary
The conference itself would’ve been bad enough on its own. Three days in Virginia Beach with physicians from across the East Coast attending lectures and networking events and social hours that nobody actually wanted to participate in. But no, PTMC had also agreed to some commemorative panel recognizing the one-year anniversary of Pittfest.
Meaning Robby somehow ended up scheduled the next day to accept a departmental honor recognizing “exceptional leadership and emergency response coordination during mass casualty management.” There would apparently also be a plaque. A shiny new plaque to hang in the ED. Because nothing helped process collective trauma like polished wood and engraved brass.
Or, Robby is selected to sit on a conference panel commemorating Pittfest and accept an award on behalf of PTMC. (Inspired by the photo of Noah Wyle looking *lovingly* at a picture of Gerran/Dennis)

“I, uh…” Robby squeezed his shoulder again, and Whitaker felt the butterflies in his stomach start to stir, fluttering against his insides and making him squirm and flush under the older man’s touch. His crush on Dr. Robby had been almost immediate upon their first meeting, and all of the touches and praise thrown his way had only fanned the flames of it. It had been a couple of weeks now, and Whitaker could swear those same strong hands and kind words were deliberately working their magic on him more frequently every shift. But it was entirely possible, and even likely, he reminded himself after each one, that he was simply seeing what he wanted to see. “Yeah. Okay, that sounds good. Thank you.”
