Dark and quiet. He thinks she's gotten the point by the time he shuts the door, even though they're the only ones in the house. Meryl tips her head back against the sink cabinet. He sits with his bare back against the cool plaster of the wall and watches her splay her hands on the cold floor tiles not covered by one of Milly's rugs.
“I shouldn't have snapped at you,” she whispers, which isn't quite a full sorry or a thank you, but he gets what she means.

Vash doesn’t think Meryl needs any sort of informative talk on the horniness of the world at large. She might be younger than him, but they’ve both tried living in that horny world, and each found they were a poor fit for it. So he picks up a curly fry himself and says, pointedly, “There is one person who’d probably be glad to know we’re not together.”
Vash Saverem is the lead singer of popular rock band Stampede. Everyone assumes he and Meryl are sleeping together (they aren't). As they spend more time at the bar Milly and Wolfwood run together, the four of them gradually find even more love and companionship in each other. (Ace Trigun Week 2026, Day Six: Rockstar AU)

When she speaks next, it’s a question. “Why’d you say all that, about dancing?”
“Wasn’t saying that ‘cause I wanted to dance with ya. To be clear.”
“Obviously. I’d sooner—” Maybe she doesn’t have the energy for a creative metaphor. Meryl slumps back against the railing. “So if you didn’t ask because you wanted to dance—”
“You wanted to. Seemed like ya wanted somebody to give ya permission, or somethin’.”
“I didn’t…” Meryl’s arms, already crossed, cross even tighter. “I didn’t want to dance. I was just keeping the time. There’s a difference.”
Wolfwood comes up with a solution when he realizes Meryl is uncomfortable dancing in public.

When Milly catches on to Meryl's pattern of skipping dinner due to overwork, she begins requiring that Meryl eat dinner with her each evening. “People already died! The firefighters—they said nobody could have done anything more, that it was—that it was incredibly stupid for people without proper training to try—”
“We don’t need training.” She’d call that note in Vash’s voice irritation, but she hopes he isn’t so stupid as to sound irritated right now, and then he finishes— “We just had to want to help. And we did.”
“By,” and Milly takes a deep breath to try, very hard, to steady herself, “running into a burning building?”

Meryl looked away, paused, and then cleared her throat. "This doesn't change how…how I feel about you."
The words shocked Milly. She'd braced herself for Meryl to react out of fear—disgust, even. Not whatever this was. As she looked closer, she could see that Meryl was now blushing furiously.
How I feel about you.
Why did that make it sound like… But, no. Surely not. People didn't feel those kinds of things for her. The conviction that it could not be true made her bold, made her press the issue.
"And…and how do you feel about me?"
Through a series of unfortunate events, Milly accidentally outs herself as trans to Meryl. However, Meryl’s reaction isn’t what she expects. Fluff ensues!

Meryl opens her mouth to respond, but the tears renew themselves before she can manage to speak. Her shoulders shake as all of the feelings she's been holding back finally come pouring out.
"Oh. Oh, shit," Wolfwood says, voice dropping with concern. "You were bein' serious."

Milly has gotten into the habit of worrying about her superior.
Well, it has long since been known to her that Meryl would rather her not view her in that way. They’ve traveled together far too long for Milly to call her ‘Ma’am’ anymore. Honestly, she feels that she’s close enough to her not to, and she’s been referring to her as Meryl for quite some time now. But she’s gotten herself into the habit of viewing Meryl as her superior anyhow, as an ideal. Meryl’s independence, while so shocking and even a bit offensive to her when they first met, has become a quality Milly can say that she admires. This makes it all the more worrying that Milly is looking after her now. Meryl’s always done a wonderful job at taking care of herself, for such a young woman with a disadvantageous stature. And yet, Milly is carrying her on her back, as Meryl rambles drunkenly.
