Summary
The moment their pod drops from the ship, Mac’s hand drops from the window. KJ lingers, clutching her other fist to her stomach as she listens to Mac’s restless pacing behind her. Neither of them says a word.
KJ turns to sit on the floor, back to the pod’s door, and sees that Mac is sitting on one of the benches. They make silent eye contact, indecipherable messages passing in a glance.

For as long as she can remember, Kit has had a knot of dread settling in her stomach. It’s made a home there, festering and growing as time goes on. It taints every happy moment, every accomplishment or small taste of freedom. It rots her from the inside out.
Jade is used to being an outsider. Growing up at Tir Asleen castle she got well accustomed to looks that told her she didn’t belong here, but now she felt them from everywhere, no Kit or Ballantine or anyone there to reassure her of her place. Jade supposes she should get used to it.
