Summary
Sherlock's school reunion has come up, matched with a retirement party for one of his most influential professors. He's reluctant to go, but his good friend John finally talks him into it by agreeing to go with him for support.
“Jesus, Sherlock, it’s just a picture,” John entered the fray with annoyance. Sometimes Sherlock forgot how lucky he was to still have his parents around.
Sherlock’s eyes darted to his with an intense look of betrayal, “You are aware that you’re meant to be in the picture with me?”
John flushed, because he hadn’t actually thought that was the case, “Why in the world would I be in the picture?”
Sherlock sighed heavily, “Because, John, you are my plus one.”
And like a ton of bricks falling from the sky to bury him beneath a pile of understanding, John realised what this entire evening was going to look like to outsiders. To Sherlock’s former classmates...the bullies.
To the rest of the world, John is Sherlock’s date tonight.

His disastrous marriage had been proof of that. But somehow, here in the warmth and safety of 221B Baker Street, here with Sherlock Holmes reading medical jargon to his daughter, Sherlock’s bony feet nudging against his leg, John couldn’t imagine anyplace that would make him happier.

Summary
Looking back later in life, John always felt that he should have seen it coming sooner. But the first weeks after the Heroic Return had been so filled up with moving back in and press conferences and recovering from the recent months and explaining and forgiving and soothing hurt friends and solving that case Lestrade had brought to them probably just to come to terms with Sherlock again that John only realised something was seriously wrong with his friend when it was too late for an easy way out.

Summary
The two men would go through old cases which Greg and the Yarders brought around, Sherlock had even solved the Ripper case in an afternoon, and the small friendly touches when John handed Sherlock a pen or a cup of tea became something more. Sherlock would lay with his head on John's lap whilst the doctor stroked his hair, or John would sit on the downturned lid of the toilet whilst Sherlock was in the bath and they would talk about old times or the future. They never spoke of Mary or the baby which wasn't John's, they discussed their future.
The tension was building; a pressure which had no way of escaping finally came to a head on a dreary Wednesday in the hallway of Baker Street.Bookmarked by johnlockishell

“It’s alright, it’s going to be alright,” John insisted, his hand pressing on the gunshot wound at Mary’s chest. Neither he nor Sherlock would ever mention the irony of the location of her gunshot wound.
“The baby,” Mary muttered weakly, her eyelashes fluttering.
“She’s going to be fine,” John nodded, grabbing Sherlock’s hand and ordering the younger man to keep hold whilst John pulled the arm from his pyjama shirt to press against the wound.
“Forgive me,” Mary whispered, her teary eyes focussing on Sherlock before closing and reopening, allowing a trail of wetness to run down her bloodstained cheek. “Sherlock.”
“Stop this silly talk,” Sherlock said, attempting his best ‘everything-is-definitely-going-to-be-okay’ voice.
“Sherlock, say it,” Mary wheezed, her breathing becoming more laboured.

He hadn’t known. How could he? There had only been two of them on the roof that day, and he hadn’t been aware of the wire that had been feeding back his words to the sniper that sat on the roof opposite with his aim centred on John. A flash of pain washed over him as the knife cut through skin, deep enough to leave a nasty scar in its path and Sherlock hissed through his teeth and tried to keep silent. The man towering over his suspended form was tall, strong and ruthless with the blade that was decorating Sherlock’s back with what he had called his ‘masterpiece in the making’, and Sherlock could only bite down on the dirty piece of cloth that had been tied around his head in a makeshift gag. The blade swiped down what felt like the entire length of his back in one agonisingly slow move, and Sherlock couldn’t stop the tears that sprang to his eyes and dripped to merge with the blood on the floor below him.
