It’s been three weeks since Belos’ defeat and a permanent portal connecting the demon and human realm was created, and Hunter’s friends have not heard anything from him. Naturally, they start to worry.
Hunter battles with his grief and depression now that the impending doom is lifted from the Boiling Isles. There’s nothing left to distract him from the fact that Flapjack wasn’t coming back, and he’s not yet ready to carve another palisman to replace him. A lingering guilt also makes its way through him as he realises he might not only be grieving the loss of his first best friend, but also the man who killed him.

Summary
"We were so worried, we heard you—" Ragatha starts, and then looks up. She meets Jax's gaze dead-on, and goes silent. Tears brim in the corner of her eye. Her hand flies up to cover her mouth. He can't tell if the look on her face is relief or fear.
Gangle's staring at him like she's seen a ghost. Pomni slowly raises to her feet, brows furrowed. She winces as every movement jars her wavering form.
Cowered on the floor, panting, confused and disoriented, with everyone standing above him, taller than him… it reminds Jax of something deeply unpleasant. They're all staring at him. They're all seeing him.
Jax knows they're not going to like what they see.
His breath quickens until his head is spinning, and he feels like he's going to vomit. He forces himself upwards with a frustrated cry, swaying in place, and then turns and bolts towards his room as fast as he can.
"NO!" Pomni screams.
(or: pomni pulls jax back from the brink.)

Summary
It’s funny, that saying he’s always heard about stars aligning. As the darkness settles over the Boiling Isles, the dying sunset’s colors cascading across the floorboards in a watercolor painting of pink and orange, Hunter can almost picture it, those glowing balls of flame hanging high in the sky. He tries to picture the constellations he remembers of this realm, all pulling into a tight line, an arrow to pierce straight through his chest and set it ablaze. Something poetic like that to describe the feeling overwhelming him in this moment.
