Summary
“What is all this?” Eddie asks. “When did you get a telescope?”
“Oh, years ago. Remember Christopher’s astronomy phase in sixth grade? We never had a chance to set it up, I honestly forgot about it until I moved here and Maddie said I had to stop storing everything in her garage. I’ve been waiting for the perfect night to set it up, and here we are!”
“You…” Eddie frowns, mind racing. “Wait, you got this for Chris?”
“Of course I did. I’m just sorry that we never got the chance to use it before,” Buck says. “Better late than never, right?”
(or, stargazing in Buck's backyard, but Eddie would rather look at Buck)

“I wanted you to hear it from a friend,” Maddie says.
I don’t want to hear it at all, Eddie thinks, curling into himself as if that can shield him from the words that she has to say. I just saw him, he thinks, remembering the way Buck smiled at him in his dream and wondering if that’s the only way he’ll get to see his smile again.
(or, Maddie calls Eddie to tell him some news. He jumps to conclusions.)

Summary
Buck grins. “Sophia promised to teach me how to make tamales, so we need the kitchen.”
Sophia loves bossing Eddie around, he just assumed she would use him for any help she needed. That’s what they always do. But if she is teaching Buck how to make them…
That could really only mean one thing.
“Tamales?” he asks, hand shaking slightly as he takes a drink.
“Yeah!”
Eddie stares at Buck’s smile, at his beautiful, oblivious smile. So. This was Sophia’s endgame. She’s not just here to steal his best friend for herself. She’s here to steal his best friend for herself and marry him and live happily ever after while Eddie watches with a broken heart.
(or, Sophia is teaching Buck a recipe reserved for family. Eddie has a very normal reaction to this.)

Summary
“What, so you’re allowed to ask me how I'm doing but I can’t ask you?”
Eddie laughs, staring at his coffee. “It’s not that, I just…I mean, it’s different, for you.”
“And it’s different for you. Sure, I’m his sister, but you’re his…”
Maddie hesitates for only a second, but his gaze snaps up to her, and she breaks off before she can decide how to complete that sentence.
“Best friend,” he finishes. It sounds insufficient even to his own ears.

Summary
Eddie flipped the postcard one last time, reading over the words he’d inked into the paper. His thumb brushed along the corner as he slipped the card into the slot.
Hey Buck,
I’m drunk in Texas and this is still the only address I know by heart. I miss you.
Yours,
E.D.
Or; Eddie figures some things out about himself while he's in Texas. Then Chris asks to move back to L.A.

Summary
Eddie is all fucking over him.
He falls asleep with his body sprawled over the broad expanse of Buck’s chest and wakes up with his face buried into the skin of his neck. They watch a movie together on Eddie’s couch and Eddie practically sits in his lap, head tucked under Buck’s chin as he blinks at the screen. When they’re alone, Eddie can’t stop himself from peppering kisses to Buck’s lips and his cheeks and his forehead as Buck giggles and pretends to try and duck. Under the dinner table every night, Eddie will hook his foot around Buck’s ankle and make Buck duck his head into a flushed smile. And Eddie is always, always holding Buck’s hand—running errands and in their own bed and at the grocery store and across the console while Buck’s driving them to work.
Maybe he’s just in the honeymoon stage. Or maybe this is how he’ll always feel—like every second he’s not touching Buck is a second wasted.

Summary
“Don’t steal him from us. We were talking!” Maddie says to Buck.
Buck sticks his tongue out. “I call dibs.”
“You can’t call dibs on a person, Evan. Do we need to have the ‘people aren’t objects’ talk?”
Buck’s hold on Eddie’s hand tightens, like Maddie was about to pull Eddie back down. He has never been more happy to be in the middle of a sibling war. Or… to be called dibs on? Eddie doesn’t know, but his heart is fluttering, and that traitorous warmth is rising in his cheeks.
Buck is a great roommate. And then he starts kissing Eddie.

Summary
“I’ll do it,” Eddie repeats, looking at Buck in one of those silent conversation ways again, but Buck actually can’t figure out what he’s trying to say this time. It messes with his brain, until Eddie speaks again, “I’ll pretend to only be a little offended none of you have thought to ask me before, but Buck, I’ve fixed a lot of cars. I can look at yours.”
(or, the check engine light comes on in Buck's Jeep, Eddie volunteers to fix it and carpool with him in the meantime, and it all breaks down from there, literally and metaphorically)

Summary
Buck looks at Eddie, for the first time in eight years. The changes in his face aren’t as drastic as they were for Chris – Eddie didn’t have puberty to get through. But his age shows, in the crows feet around his eyes and the slight frown lines. Before he left, Eddie was still in shape for working in the LAFD. Eddie looks – softer. Buck has no doubt he’s kept up with his fitness, but being CPAT-ready is a different deal.
And despite himself – Buck thinks Eddie looks good. It’s like a pang in his chest, when he finally lets himself acknowledge it. Eddie is older but just as handsome, even though he looks as awkward as Buck feels. His traitorous heart does a little flip, like there’s a chance of anything happening.
or: Buck hasn’t seen Christopher Diaz in eight years – not since his dad moved back to El Paso, breaking Buck’s heart in the process. He’s surprised Christopher wants anything to do with him when he moves back to Los Angeles for college, but Christopher is adamant on reconnecting. But with Christopher comes Eddie, and Buck has to contend with the fact that he never got over him.
