Crowley looked at him. He was still wearing his suit, there was tartan in it, but it had become polished, the worn edges returned to pristine, boring perfection. He looked too prim. Proper. Perhaps this hurt most of all.
(Crowley is on earth, Aziraphale is not. Meanwhile the world goes on. Plans, great and possibly ineffable, are set into motion. They are--always, inevitably--drawn back together. Long before reconciliation, long before they can bear it. The only thing they can bear less is staying apart.

Summary
This is a universe in which their story remains much the same, except they've been fucking each other, in secret, for centuries. But never outright: always under the veneer of false pretense. And they don't talk about it either, afterwards, hoping the lack of acknowledgement will help them uphold the distance they've created between their emotions and their bodies. Too bad they're one and the same.
Nonchronologial smutty oneshots of Aziraphale and Crowley through the ages, trying not to love each other while falling ever deeper. Finding loopholes, bending the rules, and pretending really hard that it doesn't hurt, their feigned unaffectedness. So they act, and pay debts, and negotiate, they blame temptations and aphrodisiacs - anything but face the consequences of their own actions. They operate under hypotheticals and false pretenses - because they must - but their intentions are pure.

For the second year in a row, on the anniversary of her death, I saw my wife waiting for me. Holmes had been returned from his sojourn to Europe for nearly a year, alive and whole though worse for wear; I had sold my practice and moved back into Baker Street; and we had begun an affair. It had been since the start of the year, and now I felt the weight of that decision like a millstone as I tried to ignore my dead wife’s presence. I didn’t regret it. Not for a moment. But I hadn’t expected to look her in the eye five minutes after I’d kissed him goodbye.
“I need to know you’re all right, John,” she said.
“I’m all right,” I said, and it was even true.
“I need to know you’re happy.”

He looked up and caught me watching him. I looked away. When I looked back, he was once more engrossed in the personal columns. I frowned at my novel without taking in a single word. I desired Holmes. He clearly desired me. We had engaged in a most intimate act in which I was a keen participant. And yet, despite the afterglow of bliss, I felt unsatisfied.
“Holmes,” I said after a few minutes of being quite unable to read. “Why?”
He raised his eyebrows but did not look at me. “I believe you find me attractive. I find you attractive. It seemed like a logical solution to avoid awkward romantic gestures.”
“Oh.” I felt my frown deepen. “I see.”

With my eyes closed and my head resting on the padded back of my armchair I let the haunting, lilting music of Holmes’ violin wash over me. The exquisite sounds he drew from the violin and the warmth of the fire lulled me into a gentle daydream. Even when the music drifted into silence I stayed still and quiet, basking in my cocoon of contentment.
