    Summary

“You’re not coming this summer. I haven’t seen you in a year and a half and I know it’s-it’s pathetic—“

“It’s not pathetic,” Will interjects quickly, shaking his head, “It’s not—“

“It is, Will,” he hears Mike’s voice break over another hitched breath, “I know you’re… I just want you to be happy. I never want you to come back to Hawkins, but I’m fucking selfish. I’m so selfish, and I’m sorry.”

Will lets the tears spill over and he lets that want that’s always itching under his skin show itself.

“My whole life I’ve missed you every second you’ve been away from me,” Will confesses quietly into the receiver.

    If you’re pathetic, I’m wretched.

    -

Not long after the final battle, Mike and Will were inseparable– until Will moved out to New York.

Despite the weekly calls and the freedom of living their lives without terror, there’s no world in which they could last so long apart without it feeling like torture.

Will gets a call, and three days later, Mike is at his doorstep.

It only takes a day for them to fall back together again.

    Summary

“Am I hard to read?” Mike asks, his tone harsh and his grip on Will’s wrist harsher, “I’m hard to read?”

How can you tell if someone has a crush on you when they're hard to read? Will had claimed. And it ticked Mike off because who else could he possibly be referring to? How many other hard to read people has he been in love with? No, scratch that, how many people has Will been in love with at all?

Mike has known him all his life.

And he has some nerve trying to paint Mike as the villain; as if he hasn't been sitting here with his chest open and his heart hanging on display for the better half of the past hour, begging Will to reciprocate even a fraction of how he feels for him.

or the one where byler finally talk without being interrupted. things get off to a rocky start, but between mike's candour and will's patience, i think they'll work this out just fine

As if Mike’s heart doesn’t skip where it sits: melded with the skin of Will’s open palms.

    Summary

Will could not help the question that burst from his lips, it had been ricocheting around his brain like a stray tennis ball and was simultaneously causing him the most excitement, distress and exhilaration he had felt in his entire life.

“Are you my husband?” he blurted. Mike blinked in surprise.

    “What?”

Will lost his nerve slightly. He wondered if he had been horribly wrong about this, and maybe in this strange timeline he was just a friend staying over and maybe he’d made a mistake and the daughter wasn’t really his daughter and—

Will faltered. “Um, I — well, I just thought you were — I mean, you are my husband, right?”

Mike looked very alarmed. He was staring at Will as though he had grown a second head.

“Obviously…?” he said, “Are you feeling alright? Did your mom make you try her D-I-Y coffee again?”

When nineteen-year-old Will Byers wakes up to find himself in his forty-three-year-old body, he must—with no experience whatsoever—play the part of world-renowned freelance painter, father of two very troublesome teenagers, and most strangely of all: Mike Wheeler’s husband.

    Summary

"We're basically a cover band, but Mike’s actually been doing a bit of songwriting as well. And we want to debut his first song tonight for you guys before we go. So forgive him for slowing things down and getting sappy."

    What is happening?

    Mike wrote a song?

    A slow song?

    A sappy song?

Oh god. A wave of sickness stirs in his gut.

He's been writing songs for El… that's what this is.

Or: The one where Vecna was defeated in Season 4, nobody died, Hellfire is a band, and Mike Wheeler can't stop writing love songs.

"You look good in my shirt," Mike says into his ear.

"Well, apparently I had to wear my boyfriend's shirt… just like everyone else." He gestures toward Max, El, and Steve.

    "Boyfriend, huh?"

    Will freezes.

"Lucky me," Mike says, tightening his arms and swaying them both to the music.

They sway to the music, then dance. Max and El drag him away for the more upbeat songs, his eyes always finding Mike's to see him smiling back. Each time he meets the gaze of someone else: his mom, Jonathan, or even Mike's mom, he sees nothing but happiness in their eyes.

And in this moment, when Max is twirling him around, and he spins and falls into Mike's arms, causing them both to laugh until Mike leans forward to kiss him sweetly, he feels that finally, everything is going to be okay for them.

    More than okay.

    They get to have happiness.
