    Summary

Steve takes a second to feel relieved it's not Dustin getting all sorts of arrested in places he shouldn’t be, then he goes back to staring.

It's Billy, who looks as good now as he did the last time Steve saw him: three years ago. He looks just as complicated, too. He’s got bruises on his face, a split lip.

The officer clears her throat, slowly, awkwardly, and Steve realizes they’ve been staring at each other for a while, now. He imagines, for a moment, saying that he doesn’t know this person, this stranger, pretending that Billy Hargrove was someone he used to know and kind of remembers, but--no, he’s not willing to sign for him, or whatever. To vouch for him. “Mr. Harrington?” the officer prompts.

Steve runs a hand through his hair. “Steve,” he corrects, a little absently. “Yeah, I’ll--yeah. Do you have a form, or something?”

Three years later, Steve Harrington signs Billy Hargrove out of a police station. This, it turns out, is only the beginning.

    Summary

Steve doesn’t think he’ll ever get the sickly metallic smell of blood out of his nose.

No, really, he feels like it’ll never come out of his skin or out from under his nails or out of his clothes. He feels like it’ll just haunt him for the rest of his life, drift like cartoon stink lines behind him, acting as the worst shadow a person could have.

He also doesn’t think he’ll get rid of the image of Billy pushing his own intestines back into his body, holding them in place with slippery, shiny hands. And he was still trying to forget about those demon dogs and that thing at the Byers’ house that night, forgetting the smell of dead animal and the feeling of slimy, mucousy spit and alien chirping noises. So now, his nightmares are oil-slick with Billy’s blood, and echoing with the sounds of his death rattle.

    Summary

Billy learns early that if he can’t be invisible, he has to be dangerous. So he turns himself into something untouchable—sharp, controlled, built from whatever keeps him alive. Because if he lets go of that, he doesn’t know what’s left of him.

“But if I gave up on being pretty, I wouldn’t know how to be alive.”

At night, he sheds his name like a second skin. Not William. Not Billy. Not a Hargrove. Something else. Something that doesn’t feel. Something that can’t be broken.

“I should move to a brand new city and teach myself how to die.”

So he becomes Vecna—and calls it survival.
