Your first mistake is when you spot the shirt with 'daddy' written on it in sparkling pink letters... and somehow fail to leave. You're thinking about it, you're definitely thinking about it, it would be so easy to just toss a twenty on the table and make a run for it-- But then he spots you and waves. Trapped. He tucks his hands into his pockets, ah yes, accidentally pulling his leather jacket wider open, just in case you managed to miss his shirt before. As he weaves his way through the tables, he gives you a nod that seems far too studied to actually be casual, and looks you up and down in a way that makes you grimace.

It's not cool to back down from a challenge, insincerely issued and cloaked in ironic pretense as it might be, and Dave will do a lot of stupid things once. He isn't even sure how stupid this is. It's a weird, absurd claim but that's kind of the point -- Dirk presents the field of inquiry and they both go to extreme lengths to prove or disprove his theories.

Dirk is technically Dave's uncle, but they are the same age, down to the year. Despite this, they only met for the first time at the age of sixteen, at a supremely awkward family function at a crappy restaurant. The two of them had felt obligated to hang out, being the only two teenage boys, and they'd had absolutely nothing to say. They had ended up in the kiddie room, each parked on their own sticky tiny foam mini-sofa, playing a Barbie horse game on a mostly broken PS2. Bonding ensued.
After that, they'd played online games together, which had evolved into chatting over headsets. When they graduated, the extended family had advised them to room together for college, to save on money and to have 'someone else you know there', despite the fact that they'd only met in person a handful of times at that point.
