The queen's posture changed considerably, pausing quite suddenly. The pair stopped walking and turned to face her with concern. Even as Queen, Vania had always liked to carry this excitable and down-to-earth energy; it all disappeared in a moment and was replaced with something more stiff.
Geo broke the silence cautiously, “What exactly is this project, your majesty?”The queen let out a sigh, suddenly looking as if a great burden were on her shoulders. Managing to look them in the eyes, she finally spoke.
“A little girl, she was… orphaned in an attack with Imperium's dragon hunters.”

His hands were shaking. He was so scared to move.
The people in the car were freaking out. There was shouting, screaming, crying. People were moving frantically, looking around, digging under seats, trying to find the bomb. The small girl across from Kai was being hugged by her crying mother, but the girl looked far less scared. She was looking right at Kai, overflowing trust in her eyes, smiling, knowing that he was there.
“It’s…It’s gonna be okay,” Kai told her. He managed a smile, barely moving.
“I know,” the girl said. “My mom says you always win, so I don’t have to be scared.”
“Yeah. Your mom’s pretty smart.”

Or, Kai wakes up in a drugged haze to find himself on a crowded train that he didn't remember boarding, with a bomb strapped to his chest. Over the announcements, those on the train are given an ultimatum—kill the person wearing the vest, or the bomb goes off, killing them all. Kai, separated from his team, is faced with the same choice. Meanwhile, the Ninja race to shut it all down before the timer counts down to zero.

Kai had learned quickly that being a ninja, becoming formless and undetectable, was not enough in a world so sickeningly alive as this; he needed to be absent, to become the void left behind after death, the space in between molecules. He needed to be as if he never was, in order to survive the hunts led by beasts who thrived in the twilight’s darkest nightmares.
Nightmares that were, for once, rent apart by smoke and stardust.
Kai looked back at the Fang Blade — so close, and yet so far. Its blade, iridescent and bright, steamed as its point sunk into the lava. A final declaration, the point of no return: Kai would return to the world in one way or the other, be it by ash or a coward.
Written before Monstrosity's release; possible spoilers.
