Jason falls asleep trying not to desperately inhale the faint scent of Dick’s cologne, trying not to play the words honey and sweetheart over and over in his head, trying not to think of Dick, shirtless in the bathroom, rolling his eyes and walking out without saying a word.
He tries an awful lot and fails anyway.
This is where it starts: the slamming of a bedroom door. Jason is twelve, and Dick hates him.

“Yeah,” Jason hums, pitching his voice slightly higher to match Dick’s.
He doesn’t even need to try to mask his Crime Alley drawl; he’s had enough practice of that over time, after all those years in stiff-collared dress shirts, speaking to rich gala attendees and acting as if he wasn’t filthier than the bottom of their dress shoes. Back when he was still Bruce's son.
After a run-in with a sorcerer leaves Bruce temporarily blind, Jason takes advantage of this to visit the manor whilst pretending to be Dick.

Even when he’s just talking to the rest of the Horsemen, there’s always something slightly more intense to Jack’s gaze; Jack stares at him as if he’s trying to memorise the lines of his face, as if he’s studying his likeness for a silhouette.

Except there's one small problem: most of them involve Bruce, and Jason doesn't really think Bruce cares all that much about him anymore.This is a story about how wrong he is, but I made it sad anyway.

In the dream, he puts his head on Bruce's shoulder. In the dream, he is always fifteen years old.
Two weeks away from the end of everything. From Ethiopia, from the warehouse. Standing on the edge of the world, blind to the abyss ahead. Take a step. One step forward, and you fall forever. Hold your father tight and think not of the future. Willfully ignorant in the face of the darkness. Don't think. Close your eyes and wait for it to be over. Dancing on the edge, the void waiting for them to trip. Wanting them to trip. Hungry for it.
They look at the stars. It's a nice night. Bruce presses a kiss to his forehead.
This time the dream doesn't turn into a nightmare. Jason realises why, afterwards. The stars, the waiting, all of it.
This is the nightmare.
