“I can’t believe Slider is getting married,” Maverick says, turning the heavy cream cardstock over in his hand. The envelope, addressed to LCDR Peter Michael Mitchell, lays torn open on his counter. He’s in his small kitchen, phone tucked against his shoulder, Ice’s voice in his ear. “You never mentioned he had a girl,” he adds, tone accusatory, “Mary. Have you met her?”
“Mary Elizabeth,” he corrects. “She came to visit while we were at Norfolk. Sweet girl.”
“I gotta say, I’m surprised I made the guest list,” Maverick says with a huff of laughter.

With a yawn, John unlocks the door and pulls it open, and that yawn becomes a squeak, which becomes a cough, which becomes “Buck?” He squeezes his eyes shut, rubs them with his knuckles, and pries them back open.
Gale is still there in the soft light of the hotel hallway, the leather of his A-3 jacket gleaming and crusher cap angled just-so, toothpick a taunt and temptation both in the corner of his mouth. He’s smirking and, if John didn’t know better, blushing as he gives John a quick once-over. John looks down at himself. Lipstick is still smeared on his nipples. Clearing his throat, he tugs the robe tighter shut, shielding his chest from Gale’s sight.
Blue eyes flick up to his, amusement crystal clear. John feels faint. Perhaps this is how a Victorian felt upon seeing an ankle.
“Hey, Major,” Gale says, his familiar drawl like fingernails over John’s skin, scattering goosebumps. John wants to shiver. He abstains. “You’re a hard man to find.”

“Where is he Benny?” Bucky shakes him, feeling more alive than he has since before he walked into that phone booth in London.
“They beat him,” Benny breathes out. “Then they took him to the cooler.”
Bucky drops his hands, releasing Benny’s jacket and stumbling back a step.
“What?” He can’t help but stare at Benny uncomprehendingly because Gale is a senior officer here. He goes to meetings with the Krauts and negotiates for supplies and he’s Gale. Gentle, quiet, sweet Gale and how could anyone hurt him?
“For how long?” Bucky practically yells. The cooler? He thinks and feels his heart sink. Gale can’t go to solitary confinement, none of them can survive this place alone and Gale has been wasting away even in a room full of people who care about him.
