Instead, he writes, I thought of you. Of course he did. Thought of how Asogi must have felt some similar way. Because his diagnosis isn't terminal, per se, but it is an ever-looming threat. Avoid physical activity, Mikotoba cautioned him. Anything that stresses the lungs. Avoid extreme temperatures. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
And he thinks—he wonders—he imagines that Asogi felt the same as he set off towards England, as he acted out his mission. Not terminal, no certain chance of death, but teetering on the edge of it, always.

Summary
The makeup sponge is soft, cold, against her skin. Naruhodo twitches; Asogi hums, chiding, and keeps at her work. Part of Naruhodo wants to close her eyes, but then, Asogi is above her, face so close that Naruhodo might feel the bloodwarmth radiating off it. That, and it's easier to see this way—the delicate length of her eyelashes, their dark sheen, and the smoky smudge at the corner. She's pretty.
It's not any earth-shattering revelation. It just is. Naruhodo has always known this.

In two or twenty or forty years, still sleeping upwards of fourteen hours a day, still dealing with pain splitting his head open, still struggling to organize his thoughts. Still forgetting, and forgetting, and forgetting, retreading the same steps ad nauseam. Like God is at his shoulder, mocking: This is what you get for cheating death.
